As of July 7, 2009, some 2,000 retail stores in Hong Kong will start charging HKD0.5 for each plastic bag provided to consumers.
The government plans to register retailers covered by the regulations; and these retailers include supermarkets, convenience stores, and personal care products shops.
The Hong Kong Environmental Agency determined that eight billion plastic shopping bags were being disposed of in landfills every year. This translates into more than three plastic shopping bags per person per day.
Additionally, a leading supermarket chain has started charging customers an optional 20 Hong Kong cents each for a biodegradable shopping bag.
