What makes a plastic bag compostable? In Durham, Canada its the green certification stamp on the bag. Any other bags will be rejected by the waste management collectors. This asks an important question about what is compostable and how do we know that's true? The answer is to become a label reader. Some plastic bags that are "compostable" are difficult to compost in commercial settings. This is because these bags are made from different starches, such as corn, and have trace amounts of chemicals in them, making them more difficult to break down in a commercial setting. The point? Always make sure you are buying the right bag, with the right certification for the job. This way, you will know that all your green efforts have not gone to "waste"!
