Wales Considers a 15p Plastic Bag Tax

Posted on Fri, 08/28/2009 - 17:23

The country of Wales considered a mandatory nationwide 15p per bag charge for all plastic bags used in the country.  The government officials noted that plastic bags use was extremely high in Wales, 480 million bags a year, and that the only way to stop consumers from using the bags, would be to charge a high fee for them.

“[A government official] said: ‘They [bags] represent a symbol of a throwaway society. Changing the way consumers behave takes time, but it is my firm belief that Wales can achieve this change quicker and more effectively through a charge being made on single use carrier bags at the point of sale.’”
