Tesco Posts Misleading Plastic Bag Statistics

Posted on Mon, 08/03/2009 - 17:38

"Britain’s biggest supermarket chain has published misleading figures giving the impression that it had met an industry target to halve the use of plastic bags.  The Times has learnt that Tesco, which claims to be one of the greenest retailers, missed the target and tried to conceal its actual performance."  The Times has learned that Tesco has calculated the number of plastic bags its customer's use by different figures than the other retailers were using.  When asked to state plainly how many fewer bags their customers were using, Tesco refused.  "Tesco continues to defend its policy, claiming that measures such as giving Clubcard reward points for reusing bags is more effective. It said on its website: 'We believe that climate change will only be tackled successfully if people are encouraged to change their behaviour willingly.'"
