Much of the talk lately about banning plastic bags has been about big cities around the world. Small cities and towns are equally as interested in the issue, and are finding clever ways to appraoch the problem of plastic bag waste (though on a much smaller budget). A small town in Exmouth, United Kingdom has launched a two week campaign that appears to be having great success.
"Transition town Exmouth are a group dedicated to finding ways of tackling the world's reliance on fossil fuels and looking at ways to counter global warming. On Saturday plastic bags were hung in the trees bearing the messages "plastic bag?" and "no thanks" - suggesting to shoppers of how they might respond if offered a plastic bag in an Exmouth shop. Roger Gibson of Creative Exmouth, part of Transition Town Exmouth said: "This is the second week of Transition Town Exmouth's latest message to shoppers about plastic bags. 'In the first week, blue plastic bags with big question marks on them were hung in trees in the car park adjacent to the Magnolia centre and in the Cafe Triangle in the Strand. This created quite a stir'.
The next part of the campaign will be on Saturday September 12, which is 'National Bag-Free Day'."
