Oregon says No to Statewide Plastic Bag Ban - for now.

Posted on Sat, 02/13/2010 - 13:21

Its not just cities that are trying to rid themselves of plastic bags.  States are trying as well.  Recently, a state senator from Oregon proposed legislation banning plastic bags statewide.

"The bill from Beaverton Senator Mark Hass has support from many local shoppers, people looking to cut back on litter and reduce their impact on the environment.  The Democrat's plan would still allow paper bags, but would eliminate single use plastic bags from every check out stand in Oregon.  The goal, he says, is to get more people to use reusable bags when they shop."

The legislation, however, has failed for this legislative session.  "Senator Mark Hass of Beaverton says he couldn't get the support needed for his proposed ban on plastic bags statewide. Although, Senator Jackie Dinfelder of Portland says the plastic ba ban is likely to show up in legislative session again."

At ConservingNow.com, we were incredibly excited to see a bill like this be presented on a statewide level.  It so important and we are thrilled to see cities banning plastic bags, but just think about the implications of a statewide ban.  The perhaps - nationwide?  We can dream can't we?!
